History

The 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is one of the most iconic vehicles in the German automaker’s storied history.

Known affectionately as the “Pagoda”, this nickname stems from the unique, slightly concave shape of its removable hardtop roof, which resembled the eaves of an Asian pagoda.

This model is part of the W113 series, which was produced between 1963 and 1971, succeeding the 190 SL and 300 SL, and it holds a special place in automotive history for its combination of elegance, performance, and cutting-edge engineering.

The 280 SL was designed by Paul Bracq, one of Mercedes-Benz's most influential designers, and was built with a focus on merging luxury and functionality.

Unlike the earlier curvier designs, the W113 had clean, sharp lines and a more modern, minimalist aesthetic.

Mercedes prioritized safety in this model. The 280 SL featured a rigid passenger cell with crumple zones, an innovation for its time, and it came with features like a collapsible steering column and three-point safety belts.

A long hood and short rear deck for classic sports car proportions.
Chrome accents that emphasized its luxury roots.
Large round headlights and the trademark grille with the Mercedes-Benz star.

The suspension system, featuring independent rear suspension and double wishbones in the front, gave the 280 SL superb handling.

Combined with power-assisted steering and disc brakes on all four wheels, the car was a joy to drive, whether cruising on highways or winding through mountain roads.
