The first major change to Jaguar's class-leading E-Type sports car occurred in 1964 when a 4.2-litre version of the six-cylinder XK engine was introduced, the capacity increase being achieved by enlarging the bore size. This increase in engine capacity had been prompted by the need to give Jaguar's large saloons more pulling power to enable them to compete with large V8-powered rivals in the USA, Jaguar's most important export market.

Launched in October 1964, the 4.2-litre E-Type came with a more user friendly, all-synchromesh gearbox and superior Lockheed brake servo as part of the improved specification alongside the bigger, torquier engine. Apart from '4.2' badging, the car's external appearance was unchanged, but beneath the skin there were numerous detail improvements. These mainly concerned the cooling and electrical systems, the latter gaining an alternator and adopting the industry standard negative earth, while the interior boasted a matt black dashboard and improved seating arrangements. The E-Type's top speed remained unchanged at around 240km/h, the main performance gain resulting from the larger engine being improved flexibility. For many enthusiasts, the 4.2-litre Series 1 is the ultimate and most desirable E-Type, combining as it does the stylistic purity of the original with the larger and more powerful engine.

Today, the E-Types graceful lines live on in modern Jaguar sports cars, and there can be little doubt that William Lyons' sublime creation would feature in any knowledgeable enthusiast's 'Top Ten' of the world's most beautiful cars of all time. Indeed, Indeed, even Enzo Ferrari felt obliged to concede that the E-type was 'the most beautiful car ever made'.

This stunning E-Type roadster is an original, left-hand drive, matching chassis and engine numbers example, which was delivered new to Jaguar Cars in New York, USA finished in Warwick Grey with red interior and black soft-top. Restored between 2015 and 2017, the car is described by the vendor as in very good mechanical and cosmetic condition throughout, his opinion being supported by the accompanying professional valuation report. Compiled in May 2018, the latter states that the bodywork, upholstery, and mechanicals have been completely restored with respect for authenticity, apart from a change of colour scheme, concluding that the E-Type is in generally very good condition. Accompanying documentation includes Belgian oldtimer registration papers, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, and the aforementioned valuation report.
